So, Freddy Ljungberg is on his way back from Sweden after they got knocked out of Euro 2008 last night. Admittedly to a very good Russian side. Well, better than Sweden anyway.
The fact we have released Solano but not Ljungberg has made me wonder whether BG and the Gang were hoping that Freddy would have himself a right proper good championships before they put him in the shop window. Trouble is although I thought initially that he should go, I am now sightly persuaded by some of his performances during the Championships that actually he is worth keeping around.
I digress
Having seen all but three games of this year’s Chamionships I am inclined to say that some players have stood out as potentially being valuable additions to our squad. One in particular being the Russian left-back, Zhirkov.
But then knowing what we know about the potential of our current team when fully fit, do we even need to be breaking the bank to bring in anybody? I’m not so sure
Sam

I totally agree with you regarding Zhirkov, he can either play left back of left midfield, I’d be more inclined to use him as a midfielder.
As for Ljungberg, if we can get a buyer get rid of him, we need to cut our wage bill and our wide men need pace to get behind the defence

west ham need 3-4 new players a good defender such as john mensah who has been linked with us, also if ferdinand is to leave which aint a huge blow! we should try and get lennon out the deal, i also think a player we should break the bank for would be lucas poldoski of germany, he looks sharp and would compliment ashton very well!

definitely agree with dan about podolski. but will he really be interested in coming to us?
i’m not overly sure!
don’t really know why everyone wants to get rid of anton tho, I think when he gets a good run in the team he is as good as anyone. just my opinion tho!

The left back to stand out for mein thew Euro’s even though in a loosing side was the Swiss defender, the best left back i have seen in years, cool on the ball reminds me of a big Julien dicks. Keep Freddie he was looking good towards the end of the season, who cares about huge wage bills i thought we were owned by icelandic billionaires.

Zhirkov would be a good signing. If Ljunberg can stay injury free and regain his form then he could be a good player for us but he needs to take a pay cut. I feel Anton should go for the right money. He is not Rio although I think we have all hoped he would improve more as he matured. He lacks concentration at times and can have a bad attitude. His off field problems and holiday jaunts have not helped his cause with Curbs.6m would appear a fair price.

A couple of players have stood out for me affelay of the netherlands looked extremely competent for someone so young, no great surprise but arshavin is a fantastic player, agree with zhirkov, nihats a quality player but he already plays for a top team, i wish we’d take the blinkers off and realise players such as arshavin aren’t out of reach and would do our team the world of good.

If west ham wanna challenge for a eurpeon place, we have got to be signing quality players such as poldoski he is worth bidding for he cant even ge in the bayern munich team, instead we seem to be after players that are past it like stephen carr another newcastle reject im sick and tired of west ham signing nothing players, if ramos is willing to let lennon go west ham should be straight in for him also wright phillips could be availible, wwe need a player with some pace and creativity, curbishley has got to have some imagination with his signings becacause the players we r being linked with are just not good enough, we have the money lets start spending it on promising young exciting players!!!

quick question who thinks west ham should put i bid in for patrick viera im not sure but if we manage to get lennon or wright phillips, a midfield of ljunberg, viera, parker, lennon sounds good with a up front of ashton and poldoski how good and exciting does that sound, come on west ham start attracting these calibre of players! i also think slaven bilic would be a great manager he would get our team playing some attractive football, because last season our style of football was not good and lets just say the goals were not flying in!!

very interesting point dan…..has viera past it though? or are we just kidding ourselves into thinking we are actually able to attract these sort of players?!!
I will add lennon and SWP to the poll on the Rumour Mill Part II post

i must admit viera is a risk and could be past it but u never know he would bring some much needed strength to our midfield, if we wanna move foward we have got to be attracting these players all we may aswell settle for mid table, we r just as big of club as spurs if they can get these calbre of players so should we, we have the money now there is no excuse, we need to get rid of the crap in our team, players like bowyer, cole, zamora, mullins etc for the simple reason they are not good enough if we want a top 6 finish it will never happen with the squad we have, people can blame last season on injurys but even if they were all fully fit, who would have made the difference, we need a goal scorer and a creative midfielder and a solid central defender and we badly need a pacy left back, wise up curbishley and fix these problems this summer or we r in for another boring season!!!!!

I’d like to see west ham get a player like andres D’alessandro he played against west ham 2 years ago and scored 2 goals against us at the time he was on loan to portsmouth. I’d also love to see west ham get klass-jan huntelaar he looks similar to berbatov but he is younger he is a player with a proven goalscoring record aswell i’d love to see us get eidur gudjohnsen he was a great player for chelsea up front but he can also play as an attacking midfielder i no he is injury prone but west ahm could put bonuses in his contract on appearence fee as i think we need a centre half i would like to see us get fabrico coloccini he is a big strong centre back not injury prone and consistant. I would love to see us get lennon if tottenham are preparing to let him go in his first season at spurs no one could handle him he had a disapointing season this year but he is young and just needs some confidence he has bundles of pace. so if west ham were to get these players this would be our first 11
green
neill n upson coloccini mccartney
lennon parker gudjohnson d’alessandro
ashton huntelaar
this would be a west ham side that would easily get into europe and maybe champions league.

Personally, I would like to see west ham continue to nurture home grown, local talent. It is the easiest thing in the world – if you have the money – to buy the players and buy success. i want the club that i love (if that’s not too passionate a word to sound glib) to represent what i feel west ham is all about. i feel if west ham buy all those clearly fabulous players listed here it won’t be west ham, it’ll be man u, chelsea, portsmouth in waiting – they’ll have no deply entrenched loyalty toward west ham. as we all know, after a few seasons of adjusting to the english game they’d be off when a big cash offer comes in to ‘further their careers’. I know my point, which is ostensibly about loyalty (fans and players), falls flat when you consider that past academy players now enjoy success elsewhere but things are changing. we no longer need to be the club that develops talent and sells players on, we can afford to keep them.
i could go on and on but my wife says i have to go now.
come on you irons
