[YOU'RE THE BOSS]: Who Would You Play Against Wigan?

I’m sure you’re all very exicted about the new season. Well.

What better way to kick us off than a rip-roaring encounter against the might of Wigan…I am going to be positive and say I expect us to win, but then you can never be sure at the minute. I think apprehensive is the word!

But without further ado, here is my first ‘You’re the Boss’ post of the new Premiership season….just click on the players you would like Curbishley to start the game with. Chances are it will be nothing like we expect!

Thanks for voting, and here’s to hoping….for lots of things.

  1. I think it is amazing how many vote to start Noble. I think we need to take our claret and blue blinkers off regards Nobe’s.
He is claret and blue through and through, he tries hard, he has good finishing ability and his passion is great. But let me play devils advocate – he is the slowest midfielder I have seen in a while, he is a little too small physically and he forces parker to do a lot more defensive work than he should. Parker is defo our best central midfielder by a long way, good passer, good engine, good physically etc etc. Parker plays better when he has a solid holding physical presence around him. This has to be Mullins from our current squad. I think it shows we need a new midfielder to do this role as Mullins ain’t brilliant but– no matter how much we love a home grown player with passion, nobe’s needs some serious speed work and hampers us getting the best out of Parker.-
Now I know everyone’s hearts will be in uproar but I ask you to think with your heads for a second.

  4. Why on earth is Nigel Quashie not on the list – the man’s a genius? Should be in the England set up…

  5. but what I personally don’t understand is, it how lucas neill, behrami (and maybe even faubert?) fit into the same starting line up?

i don’t think that lucas neill is as good as behrami at right back…and i don’t think that behrami is as good as faubert in right midfield. lucas neill definitely isn’t a left back….so one person has to be dropped.

and neill wins that race every time for me!

probably the only race he ever will win….i would rather see a natural left back in joe widdowson play there

but then curbs has made neill captain so he surely can’t be dropped.

  8. so what does everyone think of my controversial post on noble??

Also you have to play lucas neill left back as we have no one else and that leaves Behrami and Faubert on the right

  10. lol that’s genius bloody limey…

    Curbs will probably pick:

    Green (GK)
    Behrami, Upson, Davenport, Neill
    Faubert, Parker, Noble, Etherington
    Ashton, Cole

Subs: Lastuvka (GK), Sears, Boa Morte, Mullins, Bowyer

But whoever he plays, let’s get behind the team and hope for the best this season.

Curbs aint my prefered choice to be manager but lets at least afford him a clean slate on Saturday (I’m such a hypocrite, I’ll probably be the first calling for his head!!)…

Keep the faith – Come on you Irons!!!

  11. the ones I saw him play, in I thought he performed pretty well to be honest…that was hampton and the mls match.

he was facing beckham in the mls game and personally i thought he held himself well.

as for your comment about noble, you said it yourself: “He is claret and blue through and through, he tries hard, he has good finishing ability and his passion is great”

if you took those factors out of our team/midfield, then I’m not sure where some of them will come from… apart from noble.

what i mean is, without noble we have no-one else who is a first-team player who is truly west ham through and through and who demonstrates the same passion. he can finish and has scored some important goals in previous seasons

someone who can drive the team forward through pure unadulterated passion for the shirt is someone we desperately need in the team….because it’s not coming from curbs.

    that’s what I think anyway!

  13. Carlos – you have the team that curbs will pick bang on mate and it should be good enough to do Wigan.

Sam – you have done what I expect passionate west ham fans to do – ignore the facts about Nobes’ – dont get me wrong i love his passion and effort as much as you, but you have ignored his shortcomings and his affect on stifling others around him. He has to be as slow as Bowyer (please tell me you have noticed this?)and Parker gives us everything and a lot more than Nobe’s when he isn’t covering his arse. That is why I have to go with Mullins – not because he is better than Nobe’s but becuase he and Parker are a better pairing because he sits and the best mid filder we have can flursih. Curbs will go with Nobes becuase he thinks the fans want to see him. Personally i would like him to have enough balls to pick who HE thinks is best.

Re widdowson – oh please he was useless against MLS, rubbish for 45 mins against Southampton and very av’g in the ipswich game (where he got skinned a few times). he is way way out of prem league class currently. I know I shouldn’t slate our academy boys and I do hope he makes it but he is a long way from it yet.

  14. i do hold my hands up and say that I do agree that widdowson isn’t ready for the premier league (even though i would rather see him than neill at left back!!)….but from what i saw of him, he is a good prospect! Thinks that’s a good comprimise!

i do agree with you in terms of parker and mullins suiting each other’s playing style…i am personally a big fan of mullins, but we can’t ignore his shortcoming either and I think that the problem we have on relying on him as a holding midfielder is that if he has a bad game (which happens!) it puts us in trouble. if noble and parker are both in the side then i think it is important that if one goes, one stays back during games. that way we are not relying on a single player to pose the entire midfield attacking threat or likewise, the entire midfield defensive duties.

it certainly depends on who we are playing….at least we have the luxury this year for this to be a problem becuase like you say, parker is class

  15. Sam, good compromise :) . You maybe right that against someone like Wigan we can afford to have nobe’s and parker as we may need to hold less, especially as we are at home. However against other tougher midfields I would have to drop him for mullins. Seems that you might also consider this.

Be interesting to here others thoughts on this though as Nobe’s is such a fans fav’ and I only ever hear great things about him, and the % of votes for him is huge, does anyone else see the above argument or not?? Or am i too harsh and he really is the muts nuts??

  16. Just looked on newsnow.co.uk. Marco Boogers has been found on a campsite in Southern Bulgaria and he’s available for Saturday.

On the Noble argument. He’s a nice lad…

  17. In all honesty though the key issue is that Noble at some point decided that he was going to be a defensive midfielder. In no way did he look like that when he came through. He is now as shot-shy as the rest of the midfield; Parker, Mullins etc. Unless Behrami can play in the centre of midfield as well as everywhere else as quoted I can’t see goals coming out of midfield apart from the odd one from Etherington. Faubert as got a strike on him too but these are both wide men. Boa Morte was sh!t until the final game of the season and Dyer will be injured forever. Unfortunately Curbs has done f*ck all this summer, not even clear out some of the 40 strong squad. Sorry to be the bearer of doom and gloom I’m usually much more positive but other teams around us have strengthened and we have not.

  22. i agree that curbs will pick that line up carlos but i agree with graemed to some degree and would like to see widowson in the starting line up and behrami used as holding midfielder with parker doing the attacking at the expense of noble. by the way, don’t forget we can now have 7 players on the bench too.
