Why Is This Happening?

I’m really interested to hear people’s thoughts about the Anton Ferdinand situation. If you are not up-to-date yet, we have accepted an £8m for Anton from the powerhouse that is Sunderland (The Telegraph).

It’s not as if we have an abundance of fit centre halves…in fact only two, Davenport and Upson, are match fit.

In all fairness though, Curbishley is a genius and I suppose that he knows that when Linda is fit again, then thanks to his pace and ability on the ball, Lucas Neill will be a perfect replacement (if not first choice) centre back.

It just doesn’t make sense.

I have always said that I won’t judge Curbishley on transfers until the end of the transfer window, that is only fair. But at the minute, this is how I see it:

-We had 4 senior first team strikers, we sold one, and two are now injured. We need to bring in another.
- We had 6 (Faubert, Ljungberg, Solano, Paintsil, Neill, Dyer) right sided midfielders/defenders. We got rid of 3. One is permanently injured. We brought in one more.
- We have needed a back-up left back since the beginning of last season. That left back has been injured throughout pre-season. We haven’t brought anyone in.
- We currently have two match fit centre halves. One is not first choice. We have accepted a bid for our remaining first choice centre back.
- There is still an abundance of dead wood in our ranks who have yet to be released/sold/kicked-out/abandoned.

I don’t think Anton is a world-beater. He seems to have some sort of attitude problem. And £8m is good money for him.

Like I said, we can’t judge Curbs until the window closes, but we all know what our injury problems are like. So unless he has a replacement who costs £8m lined up, don’t sell Anton.

Unless he has a left back and a centre back lined up and we need the money for them, don’t sell Anton.

Unless we have a left back, a centre back and a forward lined up and we need the money for them, don’t sell Anton.

Am interested in where other people stand on this one…

Sam

  1. Sunderland are a bigger club than WHU in every sense…….this is just a fact of life

  2. There’s not much you can say. Until West Ham ever make statements about articles in the press, then you will never know if the stories are true or not. How many times have Ashton, Green and Ferdinand been leaving in pre-season according to newspapers.

  3. You shouldn’t be surprised that a bigger club [bigger stadium, bigger fanbase, more top-flight titles...just, well, bigger]like Sunderland has come in for one of your talented young players who can improve. It’s obvious to most outside observers that, now that the Icelandic fishmongers have gone wobbly, WHUFC are skint!

  7. Some guy called ‘Liam’ posted this on ‘Wh til i die’ over the weekend… Anyone know if there’s any truth in it???

“I have it on good authority that those injections of “Decent Signings” are on there way.

    CF – Sergio Garcia – Real Zaragoza – £8.5million
    RB/CB – Bruno Saltor – UD Almeria – £3million
LB – Jose Manuel (Mane) – UD Almeria – £4.5million

The transfer of Bruno Saltor will be concluded on the 20th August for £3million
The transfer of Sergio Garcia will be concluded on the 26th August for £8.5million
The transfer of Jose Manuel will be concluded on the 31st August for £4.5million”

  9. Oh and god no, don’t sell Anton! Fair enough he’s not Rio (yet) and mat never be as good as Rio but he’s still a decent young CB with Premiership experience that should also improve with age.

Also, he’s from the academy and we really need to send a message to other young players coming up (Sears etc.) that they can and should stay with WH to achueve their goals!

Even if we get £8M for him who else can we buy for that sortr of money that will be as good?

  10. Would be a shame to see him go but you have to wonder what sort of player he will be for the club going forwards. He has an attitude problem, that is a fact, AWOL and comes home with his tail between his legs. Part of the baby Bentley crowd?
If you are turning down a double your wages contract what are you holding out for? Surely not more money, and if he is he is not in the league of bargaining power Green is and he has seen the club wont bend on that. So you have to take it that he wants a move away so comes back to the question of what sort of player will he be for us? Heart not in it and wanting a move. I agree with not having cover given the fact we have Upson, Davenport, with Gabidon, Collins and Tomkins all crocked or just coming back but £8m is more than he is worth. Tough call!

  11. I think the rationale behind this is that we have Gabbidon and Collins to return and £8 mil is just too good to turn down for Reo’s brother. Gabbidon is also capable of playing left-back, so why spend a fortune on a back-up to one of the club’s most consistent performers in the past two seasons (Linda)?

Problem with that way of thinking is Gabbidon and Collins appear (or rather don’t!) perennially injured, and if anything happens to Upson (again!), we are left with Davenport and Neill at centre-back, pending Tomkins’ or Spector’s return (though I’m sure we can play Deano there, if he’s not injured or Spurs haven’t bought him!).

That would leave Curbishley with his favourite excuse, that of not having enough fit first team players, though the way we’re going it won’t be due to injury. but down to the fact that, once again, we’ve sold all our best players!

Thankfully, Championship play-off finals are fun!

  13. From a Sunderland point of view. I’m quite pleased we have made a bid (and hopefully it’s correct that the bid has been accepted).

Will, I think your correct on the basis Ferdinand isn’t worth 8 Million, but at the end of the day, we are in desperate need of a decent centre half, just look at the Liverpool match. Poor defending lead to Torres scoring the winner, in that case, I think Keane is willing to pay slightly over the odds for a player who is better than what we already have and will undoubtably strengthen our squad. I don’t know about anyone else, but in Curbishley’s defence, he will be getting more money than he thought he would get for a player of Ferdinands callibre, so I’m assuming he will see it as money gained, and not a player lost. He could get a fairly decent replacement (better than Ferdinand) for that type of money.

  14. Sam H are you having a laugh? As a Liverpool fan, and coming from a small club like West Ham, I would think carefully about saying “small club in Newcastle”

I don’t think Sunderland fans are getting keen on their enthusiasm either. For such a small club, last season the Hammers were just a BIT lucky to have gotten 3 poitns from Sunderland. for such a bad club, and such a small club that you say Sunderland are, aren’t you a tad embarrased that they gave you guys a hiding at Stadium of Light last year?

It’s weird thatall of the decent players West Ham have produced over the years (Lampard, Rio, Carrick etc…)
have thought they would never get anywhere and achieve anything with West Ham, and then jumped ship, Anton is going to do the same aswell.

    Unlucky.

  16. I agree with Will – 8m is far more than Ferdinand is worth, he has an attitude problem, delusions of his own capabilities as a player in the future. Yes – if an offer of doubled wages isn’t good enough, what is he after? I can only assume it’s to move to the top four. At Sunderland we do need a central defender but this one’s overpriced and roper club conceited. Oh, the comment above, ‘that powerhouse Sunderland….’ Hm, up and down a Bit recently, agreed but definitely on the rise at at the moment.
Don’t really think WHU have got a lot to brag about, much as I respect them as a proper club with real supporters and great history. Keep AF – overvalued, cheaper imports of equal or better ability are available.

  18. to the guy who said “come back when u can fill out your stadium and have won somethin in the last 50 years:”

    get your facts right.
west ham are well-known for having a full stadium week-in week-out.
the only reason we don’t have a higher attendance is the lack of seats at the Boleyn

and comparing what the two teams have won in the last 50 years:

sunderland – fa cup RUNNERS UP (1992)
    – league cup RUNNERS UP (84/85)
    – championship winners (04/05, 06/07)

west ham – european cup winners cup – (64/65)
    – RUNNERS UP (76)
    – inter-toto winners (99)
    – top flight winners (59/60, 64/65)
    – second tier winners (80/81)
    – FA Cup winners – (64, 75, 80)
    – league cup RUNNERS UP (66, 81)
    – charity shield (64 – shared)

i won’t mention lower than the second tier of english football honours, mainly ’cause west ham havent been out of the top two divisions of english league football since they came in

i hate these battles of “who is a big club and who isn’t.”
winning trophies makes u a big club yes, but as does fan base, tradition, the players you produce etc etc

in this case, sunderland and west ham are BOTH big clubs, but on your logic west ham would be bigger due to the amount we’ve won compared to you in our history.

please people, get your facts right before posting

    -rob

its worth mentioning west ham were also the last team to win the fa cup with both an all-english team, and also the last to win as a second tier team in 1980

Good call Rob, I am not the least interested in the crap coming out of the mouths of Sunderland, Liverpool and Evertoon fans who have posted on here, what the hell has it got to do with you scousers anyway? Liverpool are so good that they’ve gone from No1 in the country to No 4 and Everton are broke, so before you slag others off look at your deluded selves first. Sell him, we’ll finish above Sunderland again this year and there isn’t one player Sunderland has that I would want at UP, but Curbishley better go and use that money immediately as we need at least 4 more players.COYI

  20. Firstly to Rob who said “i hate these battles of “who is a big club and who isn’t.” Hey Rob – if you hate them so much – why did you go to such great lengths to investigate and record each clubs achievements? You are as much of a four year old than all the other oafs that find it necessary to get embroiled in the “My club’s bigger than yours crap” You’re a hypocrite. You completely contradicted yourself and made yourself look like a proper wombat. By the way toothbrush head – Sunderland won the FA Cup in 1973 – not mcuh of a historian are you? I will concede that West Ham are a great club, seeped in East End tradition – I have one question though. Why do you ponces always sing about “pretty little bubbles”?? To the Liverpool and Everton supporters – good on ya lads. It’s nice to see a bit of objectivity and impartiality written about a club you don’t support – nice one. Sunderland – every single die hard fan will admit that we have massively underachieved – that is obvious – but it is what it is. We are the Colin Montgomery of football!! We have a fantastic stadium, and a huge fan base, but on the pitch the football has never reflected the size of the club and it’s supporters. But listen – Niall Quinn has unbelievable foresight and ambition, and I think he’s going to prove himself to be one of the best Chairmen in history. He loves the club, and it’s supporters and his passionate determination to give our long-suffering fans something to shout about is unwavering. I have every faith that we will one day be able to better compete with the likes of Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd etc etc. Hey JMan – “There’s not one player that you’d want at UP eh? What – not even Graham Kavanagh? – Good night.

  35. Ok,

Just a short missive for you all.

Having observed all the puerile and fatuous banter ‘above’; I thought I’d loiter pensively, twiddle me fingers in contemplation, whilst watching some paint dry with alacrity (Which, for the six year olds present – patently isn’t a sci-fi heroine or character out of Nick toons) Oh and by the way, Magnolia definitely, markedly alters it’s appearance after just an hour or so !

Now your ‘never-never’ dust has, or seems to have, calmly settled, and you have all flown to beddie bize to be to be wiv the fairwies, I thought I’d add this little interjection to augment the seemingly already tumultuous maelstrom that has seethed quite menacingly and ridiculously during the course of the last day – Oh, also without bothering to check back to see if you all funk me off completely – haha,

Coz, quite Franky (Who seems to have recently achieved an above inflation, shall we say, trough full of extra ‘nose-bag’: fat bar-steward) I couldn’t give a flying funk!

Note, I’m alluding to childish retaliation here, certainly no villification of my beloved ‘Ammers, or indeed, for the record, certainly no ambiguity where the claret and blue blood that perpetually courses through me veins is concerned, or vein – when I’m excited/aroused. :)

Yeah, I can hear you snigger, you depraved lot.

Anyway, back to the subject matter in hand.

Succinctly, whatever you may feel, a certain Mr A Ferdinand, not to be confused with Mr R, who’s shadow and name he indubitably trails within like some sort of wannabe ethereal leech; doesn’t and never ever has, wanted to remain at the ‘Ammers.

Are we all already forgetting the two previous transfer requests !? Or would we prefer to continue blithely burying our heads in the sand once again oblivious of the fact that he doesn’t want to stay ? Ostrich time ! hehe.

And, having been ‘incontestibly’ offered – allegedly -(A bit paradoxical I know, but you never know when the legal eagles are lurking precariously in the shadows,to eagerly pounce on a poor unsuspecting Boleyn poet :) – a ‘triple, yes, triple pay rise ! – gasp, comes up for air – to swell, in my humble opinion, his already sloshing bucket full of hard-earnt Claret and Blue dosh – for someone who is truly over-rated in conjunction with his elder sibling – more air, goes blue – what on Earth are the board/management supposed to do?

Now, I’m no proponent of those farcical twats that run the club, neither (as some of you may know from me nick) do I hold an allegiance whatsoever to our Icelan-dic head and his cabal of utter loonatics, oh and fishermen.

Yep, they seem more clandestine now with freedom of information, snort!, than the selection and inaugeration of a new Pope by The Vatican !! A little more black smoke please, and less of the smoke ‘screen’.
Ashton, severe cramp! The official website, I ask yer ! haha.

With all those invectives firmly put aside, it is as clear as a nun’s conscience, that the boy ‘DOESN’T’ want to play for us, and never really has.

So, do they cash in on his palpable discord now, or wait until his contract expires and receive fug all for the greedy git ?

You may not like it, but these are the stark facts.

Will, he go to Blunderland, well, I don’t think so after already hilariously snubbing the barcodes (Which seems to be the ongoing theme since the inception of ‘Queen Kev’ – it’s the hairdo)

Am I bothered about it ?

Nope, if he doesn’t want to be a Hammer, I say ‘funk him’ he is over rated, albeit a ‘good’ central defender, and I’m plumping for the 8 mil. Period.

Candidly, I don’t want any player who doesn’t ‘want’ to wear the Claret and Blue, bar no one.

Could we get an excellent central defender for that amount, or two. Well it doesn’t require a higher degree in math to work out that perplexing equation does it?

Debateable though, with trouble arising, should you decide to add the common denominator ‘AC’ into the conundrum, where we’re about as likely to ‘get one’ (let alone 2) as I would be a round of tonsle hockey with Angelina Jolie ‘along with’ her female friends. Snigger.

Actually, I think the poor bloke (Anton) is deluding himself big stylee. I’m absolutely certain that he is of the mis-conception that one of the big four are going to come and ‘attempt’ to smash down the Boleyn gates for his dis-service. Fool!

I genuinely think his mal-adept attempt at brinkmanship is going to backfire on him worse Saddam’s vein attempts to tell us ‘There are No Wesopenss of Mass Destruction’ There seems to be a certain air of inevitablitly about it :)

Yep,they might well force him to the NorthEast now. Better than the Middle-East I suppose.

I certainly know, If any other ‘junior’ employee, from any other firm, behaved in this irreprehensible manner, they would have been history years ago.
Players have all the power? I think Guddy will put his gumboot-like stamp on that notion, and quite robustly.

So, all of yer – there’s my view on it, to which I’m funking well entitled!

    Sam, unleash the Crachan !

I prepare myself eagerly for the mauling of the ickle wolf cubs bounding and scampering around the context of this interesting and alluring poser :)

  36. Mr Poet,

I enjoyed your informed logic regarding the Anton Ferdinand situation. A succinct, unpretentious article with the vital ingredients – brevity and concision. I dislike terseness and pithiness – both unpleasant characteristics of the written word. At last – I find someone with more than 5 gray matter cells to “fence with”.

Firstly – before I endeavour to cast my eager reply in the general direction of yourself regarding your affable yet impetuous centre back, may I suggest you paint your child’s room a “Nantucket gray” colour. It has a more interesting hue than magnolia – which, let’s face it, is only one tone down from beige.

Secondly – beddie byze is quite some time away for yours truly – despite being born in Durham and supporting “Blunderland” – I dwell in the North American city of Vancouver. My game of choice this day has been to unashamedly provoke the ameoba’s on this site, posting ridiculousness about which club is bigger than the other!!!!! My use of the name “toothbrush head” has been identified as maliscious mischeviousness and I have hitherto gathered a reputation of being “immature”. I weep at the very thought. Incidentally – the “Barcodes” are affectionately termed “The skunks” in Mackemland. Please add that to your impressively growing football savvy.

Whilst I respect your superior knowledge of the boy Ferdinand – he would be a welcome addition to our “defencefullo’bignames”. Alas we can only boast “Nuggsy Nosworthy” – a vastly improved centre back under Royston Ethel Keane, if not somewhat lacking in stature. Then we have Daniel Collins whom we purchased from Chester City for 74 pence. At the time, I thought Mcarthy should have offered a few pence less. Frankly – I would pay 8 million quid for anyone with the name “Ferdinand” under the circumstances.

Your standpoint is a correct one. If a player wants away despite being offered enough money to buy Switzerland, it’s time to say “faretheewell” and pay for his freeking taxi.

Your reference to the North East being better than the middle east – think again young man – have you ever been to Biker?

Good luck to the “Appy Ammers” in this season of good will!! I’m sure if we do sign Mr Greed he will be welcomed as vociferously as Mr Beckham was to Upton Park in that first game after the world cup. The returning Mr Ince and Mr Cottee also spring to mind when considering the forgiving compassion bestowed on them by the E7/E13 dwelling population. For what it’s worth, I believe epidemic, inherent and blatant prejudice towards anything northern might just get in the way – as usual. If so – good riddance – it’s onwards and upwards for the Blunders for decades to come!!

  37. Ha ha ha.

    Touche Robbo,

    A worthy rejoinder, mate.

Well, talking of beddy-byze; it, I think, being a bit later here than it is there? I was just about to curl up and watch Keira Knightley ‘again’ , for the third time, before MASTURCATING (I like to eat this time at night) myself furiously into blissful oblivion. Chuckle.

So, for this evening, although I appreciate your candour and wit, will have to adjourn, to attend to my John Thomas. That’s my ummmm boy’s name.

It is however, refreshingly good to meet a fellow articulate, well, ish in my instance – I’m guessing a ‘writer’ – although from a completely different divide and aspect regarding ‘our’ game, which it incontestibly is, no matter what ze Germanz say.

Definitely belongs to us Hammers tho, mate. After all, as we perpetually let everyone know, we did, veritably win the World Cup for every other bugger in ’66

I’d be intrigued though to know what on Earth a ‘Mackam’ is doing all the way across the pond, ‘and’ without his necessary intravenous infusion of the red and white striped stuff; and I aint alluding that pith-poor tinny of an abortion that seems ubiquitous , yet more expensive than liquid platinum, in just about every night club in the country.

I’ll bid you a good night for now, and will adjourn to fence with you another time. :)

There is a reason for my inarticulate mind-fog this time of night, plus having to turn in, and it has nothing to do with the aforementioned ‘chewing’. :)

You’d have to message me direct to discover the reason, I wouldn’t care to divulge it here, palpably encompassed by non-entities.

It’s been refreshingly different to discover a non-epsilon minus amongst these bizarre, digital footy mediums, and will surely speak or fence with you another time.

I do however find it vaguely puzzling that a ‘Blunderer’ would want to enter a Hammers site in the first instance. Wonders if there isn’t a ‘Black Cat’ equivalent? Or if the North East populous ‘still’ have no knowledge of the Queen’s English or indeed a P.C :) I would not be remotely compelled to go there if there were one, he said quizzically ?

Leave yer mail addy, preferably one you can delete the inevitable profanity from if you need to, and we’ll talk.

I’d be intrigued to hear your story, and I will reciprocate :)

    D.J.E

I trust your John Thomas has been adequately attended to and is nestled nicely in his magnolia haven.

Here’s a link to a website – it’s a compilation of every news item relating to the hammers. You have to be a bit selective because the articles from the US or Oz are typically bland. But it’s a great way of finding out snippets. http://www.e-soccer.com/news/news_f.aspx?CategoryID=153
That’s how I found your site – there was an article called “why are we doing this” – that was my “in”.

    Good on yer. Speak soon.

  39. As a Sunderland fan in London, can I apologise on behalf of the rest of us for the embarrasing twaddle posted further up the thread? The whole ‘We’re a bigger club than you are’ stuff is just bullshit.

West Ham and Sunderland are both decent sized clubs with plenty of potential. West Ham are more established as a top flight side and have more pulling power because they’re based in London.

I do genuinely think we’ll be establishing ourselves as a reasonably competitive midtable team over the next few years, though.

  42. Why do Sunderland fans feel the need to say they are a bigger club? Inferiority complex me thinks. You have a big stadium yes, but that only because land in the north east is on par with the prices in Baghdad! You get steel for next to nothing and you northerners will work for a can of special brew as unemployment is so high! If things where like this in London we would have a 50,000 stadium as well! And you all have very short memories; a few seasons ago Sunderland went down with the lowest ever points total (before Derby)! In all honesty west ham and Sunderland are both big clubs, but not the biggest! and in regards to Ferdinand, I believe he should be sold, but only if someone who is better is brought it, to send the message that we are no longer a selling club and we are simply selling someone who is prone to mistakes, has a terrible attitude, although he is a player with the potential to be more than an average!

  43. I’m happy to see all you Sunderland fans obviously positive about the changes at your club. The last time such was witnessed was with another northern club, Leeds, and look what happened to them poor buggers. I don’t care whether you think you have the biggest cojones or that your fan base is bigger than ours, just your opinion, but what is fact is unless you have Abramovich type money you cannot and will not be able to buy success and you have been bit of a yo yo club. I hope you do well, finish below us of course, because I was once good at football and played up in the North East a few times and love the people and their attitude to life.

  44. what do people think about james collins’ return by the way?
i’ve always liked him, and if he gets a run of fitness going (i know thats a big if) then i think he will be good for us

i’d also be more than happy to bring in Givet and Appiah as has been reported recently

but i still think we need a striker, someone to compliment Ashton. i realise Bellamy would do this, but i’m slowly giving up hope that he’ll be fit for more than a few weeks at a time
and i think Sears needs a couple more years, maybe loan him for 6 months-a year?

  45. I personally agree that ginge will be good for us….it’s just a shame that with most of our better players, things depend on his fitness.

In fact, I’m thinking that Curbishley may probably be thinking that Collins is an ideal replacement for Anton and will use the money to strengthen elsewhere. I personally think he is a better player than Anton.

I also agree that Sears needs more time…I just can’t see him being loaned out in the situation that we are in…even if he did bring in someone else, with the injury record that our frontline has, it is more than likely that Sears will need to stay around!
Zavon hines can go out on loan though….he looked quality in pre-season

  47. Just a short missive for the Green Street Massive :)

I couldn’t agree more with Sam’s observation, that our Jamo is indeed better than the petulant Anton.

Who, this time and quite hilariously, seems to have issued a ‘give me a pay rise or I’ll leave’ feint too many times for the board’s liking.

Yep, it seems as though his ill-advised attempt ‘once again’ to play aforementioned brinkmanship at the expense of the Hammers, has backfired. ‘So’ dramatically, that his face now resembles the World record for the largest over-cooked omlette.

It is also looking increasingly likely that Blunderland ‘will’ be his ‘final’ destination, haha – no other bugger wants him – and despite his hestation this week that he might wish to pull back from the ‘brink’, I think the club have quite rightly funked him off completely, with no avenue back.

    Frankly, good riddance !

    A side-step for Anton? ……ponders.

No, on the contrary, I would suggest that right now, and for the rest of his career, he will rue this move as a colossal error, which by his own hand, is discernibly stuck ‘full pelt’ in reverse gear.
He will never play for England lodged in the Stadium Of Shite, not that he ever would have done anyway.

I am of the sincere opinion, that like his brother, he actually believed that one of the top clubs would make a move. Not even a hair’s twitch , Anton – unlucky, mate!

This might seem very anti-Ferdinand to you, but this self-inflicted undertone has been simmering away for at least a couple of seasons now, and candidly, I’ve got the hump with him.

    Collins:

Despite funking up the team photo, (Sniggers) I really like this guy, and have since the first time I saw him.

He knows his limitations, and the injury was more than unfortunate, but he always gives 110% with even so much as a winge at a lino!

That’s always been important factor as far as I’m concerned. Yep, you’ve got to be at least ‘good’, but that coupled with giving your all in the Claret and Blue will always get my vote.

I sincerely hope the cruciate injury won’t interfere in the robust way that he always ‘goes through’ players :) .

His comeback performances seem to illustrate that that is not indeed the case – marvellous!

I for one, will be happy to see him back at he Boleyn – I just hope the injury curse doesn’t rear it’s ugly head again.

Mind you, I think his ‘shock’ of an almost incandescent barnet will have frightened that foul spectre away the first time around and for good. Let’s hope so.

If he ‘can’ stay fit, I think we’ll actually see the rise of a favourite over at the Hammers – I hope I’m right on that one – Go on Ginge !!!!!

To conclude, just a footnote on Anton.

It was only a few weeks past, that I heard this ‘div’ state that he would be able to leave the Hammers with his ‘head held high’ for the dis-service that he bestowed on the club.

I suppose we’ll see what type of greeting he gets when he returns to Upton Park – I don’t think there’ll be a ripple of ‘applause’, do you ?

I have just six words for Ferdinand Junior: “Funk the funk off you Mug!!

No, after further contemplation, ummmmm eleven!
” And don’t come funking back!” hahaha

Ok, I’m ready now for your customary retaliatory strike, please feel completely free to do so, but beware the wrath of my pen.

    All My love, haha
