Diving Around and Conning the Ref

I don’t know if anyone else read this post from a Bolton site, but I was pretty suprised to read the following:

“They came, they saw, they rolled about on the floor a lot, spent a considerable amount of time trying to con the referee and were lucky not to have two players sent off.”

Is it just me or was someone watching a completely different game to me? In all fairness to the rest of the article, it does become clear that they were watching a simialr game as they go on to concede that it would have been fair had we won, and that we played some “neat football”. However in all the time of being a West Ham fan (my whole life) I don’t ever recall us being accused of cheating and trying to con the ref.

If we are throwing accusations around, then Bolton are a dirty, over-physical, long-ball side, who bore themselves to victory….just thought I’d say

(If you’re looking for a more fair-sided recollection of events, then this one from The Times is your one)

  1. I read that article and felt the same as you. I guess, if you’re a Bolton fan and your fed a diet of aggresive, negative, long ball football, you have to justify your team’s performance some how. Mark Noble did stay down a short while after being felled, but apart from that and the Collins’ departure, I can’t really think what that particular Bolton fan meant. Both their goals were well taken though and we can at least have the good grace to admit that, even if a blinkered moron is calling us cheats.

  2. They’re just bitter, even though they won.
    Says it all, doesn’t it?

  5. Not quite sure why they’re always so bitter towards us. A big section of their fans – the knuckledragger contingent – hate us. I mean really hate us. I’ve seen some very nasty, evil stuff directed at us on various Bolton forums and sites in the past. It’s been going on way before ‘Tevezgate’, maybe it’s the hatred of all things London.
I don’t particularly have a problem with them – just the brand of ‘football’ that their football team ‘play’. We should just agree to give them 3 or 4 points every season and avoid them completely.

  6. that’s interesting, i wasn’t aware of that.

Last time I went up there, there was a bit of trouble outside the ground….although that might of been Wigan, i’m not sure now I think about it!!

  7. Neither was I mate. I was quite taken aback by it when first came across it on a forum a few (three maybe ?) season’s ago But I came across it a couple more times and it seemed very clear that we are not one of the more popular clubs up there. No idea why. I hasten to add that I am not tarring every Bolton fan with that Brush – just those of ‘narrow brow’.
Maybe it’s that North / south nonsense. Can’t be arsed with it myself.

  8. Like many others I was staggered by the comments on that site. I must admit that I enjoyed the game and I have no problems with the result because you have to score more goals than the opposition to win and we didn’t. The ref was awful but Bolton won’t change their tactics. Better teams than West Ham get nothing from the Reebok. We would have won the game, and in all probability against Boro, with a striker of Bellamys class in the team.

  9. i too was amazed at what i read. the sad fact about it is that i actually used to slightly rate davies as a player simply because i think he is the best english player at making the most of a long ball, i also think some of the ways he wins fouls are clever and bolton rely on him to do those things. however he has the side of his game which is just pointless, the constant elbows and dirty tackles but whats more disapointing is if he is doing these things then thats fine, he can if he wants, but the ref should be booking him and sending him off when he does. 4 times i counted he fouled ours players very early on and the 4th foul was a very ugly challenge on upson and yet the ref still thought non were worth a yellow card. and these 4 fouls are only the ones the ref actually gave as fouls too. anyway enough about davies. i thought we played well again, dominated which in a way makes defeat easier as we know at least our form hasn’t dropped we are just getting that bad luck again and not finishing. im still quite confident for this season tho and i can see savio startin to have a real impression on games.
