“Bullish but inevitably dull”

Before I start, I just wanted to send out my thoughts to Davenport and his Mum. The kid has played for both West Ham and Spurs, and personally a player I really rate. Let’s hope for a quick recovery and importantly, a quick return to football.

It’s this time of the season again when along with the West Ham, Spurs derby comes a barrage of deluded drivel from websites and comments on websites alike. Quite clearly this year is no exception.

What gets me every year is that Spurs fans insist that they couldn’t care less about this fixture. That for them it’s not a big game. That they have bigger fish to fry and ultimately that Arsenal is a bigger game for them than West Ham is. Yet every year they feel they need to prove themselves, and their views, to us. But I didn’t think we were a ‘big team’? I didn’t think you cared about little old West Ham. You only have to read some threads on forums and blogs online to really get a feel for actually how much Spurs fans are bothered by this fixture.

West Ham fans have no delusions of thinking that we are a bigger team than Arsenal or a bigger derby for Spurs. But likewise, and I hate to burst your your arrogant, egotistical bubble but believe it or not for West Ham fans the Spurs game is not our biggest derby either. It’s Milwall.

I’m pleased to have drawn that line in the sand just so we know where we all are.

And before I get a ton of Spurs on here coming out some belting, witty one liners such as “yeh, Milwall are your biggest game and they’re in league 1. Haha, that says a lot about Wet Spam” – or other such deriratives – a derby is not determined by the quality of teams who are playing each other. Because if it was, the Arsenal v Spurs game would not be a derby. Sorted.

I also really wanted to bring this up too. Harry Hotspur at this post here decided that he’d highlight some erroneous details (at least he felt) in a recent post at KUMB. Yet failed in his attempts to convince me personally with the general jist of his post. Claiming that we are uneasy on the eye, that out football is “bullish” and “inevitably dull” and ultimately reminiscent of lower league football.

Quite clearly the views of someone who has not seen us play much recently. We hold our hands up and say yes we need a new striker, but to essentially believe that we are playing Sunday League quality of football is laughable. And frankly sums up quite nicely the delusion of many Spurs fans.

You win two games and you think your Champions League. Or winning the league even.

Give me a break.

  1. I dont remember Spurs fans being so mouthy prior to the first game of the season, but all of a sudden, 2 wins into the season and, according to King and an embarassed Phil Brown (who’s team is the most our of form team in the Premier League) Spurs can seriously look at a top 4 spot! King even jokes about winning the league!

What gets me is the vast majority of Spurs fans claim that West Ham are deluded yet Spurs have held this tag amongs the whole of the Premier League, Football League even, not just in Essex and London.

    Top 4? You’re ‘avin a laugh!
