Parker the shining light in a season of torments

You have to wonder how things may have gone at West Ham this season had it not been for Scott Parker, so it is no surprise he has been named 2009/10 Hammer of the Year by supporters.

The inspirational midfielder won the SBOBET Player of the Month award four times during the season, which is around a quarter of the season, and Parker also won several Man of the Match awards throughout the campaign.

It has been a season to endure for all West Ham fans and their top-flight future was not secure until the final fortnight of the season, indeed the football betting suggests the season will end on a low when we face Man City. With the calibre of stars on big wages at the club this performance this season has not good enough.

Parker seems to be the only one who wears his heart on his sleeve week-in week-out and these spirited displays have earned him the admiration of fans, and no-one would argue at David Sullivan’s comments that he is the only player at the club who shouldn’t be sold.

The England midfielder also won Goal of the Season and Players Player of the Season to go with his Hammer of the Year award, and you can see he is held in such high regard by players and fans at Upton Park.

After watching a montage of glowing comments from other West Ham players at the awards ceremony, Parker said: “I’d like to thank my fellow players because to hear those sorts of comments and receive the votes from your own team-mates means a lot.”

It is obvious that Parker is the one star that the West Ham team of the future needs to be built around, and the board and the manager need to bring in some real quality to maybe take some of the pressure off the midfielder – he has carried the team this season but it may be unfair to ask him to do this year-after-year.

With injury seemingly sidelining Gareth Barry, the World Cup betting suggests Parker’s fine form could be rewarded with a spot in Fabio Capello’s squad and that would bring a smile to the face on any West Ham fan.
