After a fairly horrific summer with England, Rob Green was probably desperate for the new season to start so he could prove his ability. However, the new campaign has only brought more trouble for Green. Not only has the West Ham stopper been dropped from the England squad, he wasn’t even selected as back up when Fabio Capello suffered a goalkeeping crisis and was forced to raid the Under-21s.
Green’s confidence looks to have vanished for the time being at least. He has looked decidedly dodgy for West Ham and has to take at least part of the blame for the club’s current position. He was certainly at fault for Chelsea’s opener at the weekend, after he failed to hold on to a tame attempt.
Green’s latest mishap resulted in jeers from his own fans during the rest of the Chelsea game and his manager, Avram Grant, made it clear Green would have to “react like a man” in his bid to recover from it. Captain Scott Parker has been quick to show his support his keeper.
He said: “Greeny is a very strong character”. There has been more than one time since I have been here that he has kept us in the game.”
Parker is spot on with his comments and the fans should pay attention, not least because the side don’t have an adequate replacement. Supporters need to remember that strikers, midfielders and defenders all make mistakes during a game, it’s just they’re not as high-profile of those of goalkeepers and let’s not forget, the Betfair Football odds made Chelsea favourites to win that game anyway.
Green will come good again and when he does he will help his side climb the table. Many so-called experts have made West Ham betting tips for relegation, but all they need is for their key players to hit a run of form and they will be safe. Green’s critics should also remembered that he was one of the main reasons the Irons didn’t go down last season and it was only recently that he was being touted as a possible next Arsenal number one. Supporters should remember that when they next choose to jeer their keeper.

Why do people keep sticking up for him his a plonker as is most of the West Ham team at present , when they start performing (your guess is as good as mine),perhaps then and only then we can consider them as Premiership material . Grant has some good material to mold into a team I only hope its soon .

The reason I would stick up for him is because he’s played every league game for us for 3 years and counting.
He has been very loyal to us and deserves the support of the fans

Just two things, Green didn’t fumble Chelsea’s opener it was their 2nd goal he cocked up & Parker is not West Hams captain should be but hes not Upson is.
I still beleave in Green but think he needs a rest would like to see Stech or newbie Boffin given a shout against Stoke. Probably would of been wiser to use one of them against Chelsea as it was a game noone expected us to get anything from. Where as Stoke is a must win so they will prob stick with Green.
I am fed up of so called fans slagging of our own team grow up and get behind them or support someone else

Green will come good, I hope so too! Oh, if he hadn’t made this mistake at the World Cup finals! Maybe the Hammers’ start into the new season would have been much better than shipping three goals in every game so far…

heres the thing, as you mentioned sam that we should stick by him because we had no replacement… your spot on with every west ham blog but i’m sorry i’ll have to disagree on this post . IF we did have a replacement, i’m sure we would vote him out with no hesitation. if joe hart had a few dodgy games and games that could effect his sides season, he would be dropped and given would be in, fact.
there is no such thing as a better sub, because if they were better they would be playing from the start. however the current side is a shamble atm.
i do blame green for our lack of form… but its not just him. there is a full squad of under performers (or are they over performers from the past seasons?)
Cole… Lazy…
Illunga… over-confident…
upson… Sloppy
Behrami… No Ambition
Tomkins… nervous
Boa Morte… PAST IT
Kovac… No Impact
Noble… too comfortable
Green… no confidence
Dyer… hestitant
Parker… Lack of Authority
it’s the whole team to blame!
if i was manager i would DROP the underperformers and play with our acadamy stars that could make an impact! Eyjolffson, Sears, Spence, Stanislas, Moncur, etc
if i was manager i would organise midweek friendlys against semi-pro opposition, make them work for their money and get them into a winning mentality before the big league game!
it’ll give the team a reason why they want to be in the squad. they expect to be picked!
whats happened to Barrera? i think he is shit hot, play him. Obinna looks good, not too sure on Frederic :S, Reid looks a good asset (but he is a better centre half) Da Costa where is he? probably one of the best performers last year.
we’ve lost 2 players on the cheap that we could of built around, Diamanti and Daprela.
it’s hard to get a team together with what we got and if we continue to play like this, we deserve to be relegated before xmas.
as long as we are in the premier league by 2013, i really have lost intrest as i belive the club is being managed and Coached the wrong way!
